Opportunity: Give feedback on MODA Center project before 6/24

City of Portland

The City just released its survey to gather feedback regarding its future investment plans in the MODA Center. Council is seeking the broadest scope possible of public opinions ahead of negotiations on June 24th!

Additionally, Admin is also hosting two pop-up feedback events Saturday (6/13) in the district, which we’ll be at with water and Otter Pops. They will be at the following locations:

Lents Park (SE 92nd Ave and Steele St.) – 12:00 pm-1:30 pm

Parklane Park (SE Hawthorne Ct and Main Street) – 3:00 pm-4:30 pm

You DO NOT have to attend an event in order to submit a survey response!

The City has a full breakdown on its website at https://www.portland.gov/council/moda-facts, but a VERY simplified TLDR is:

  1. The MODA Center is owned by the City
  • It was purchased in 2024 for $7 million by the City Commissioners under the old form of government
  • The City now leases the MODA Center to the Blazers and for concerts and such, the revenue from which goes back to the City to pay for the operating costs – whatever is left after that goes back into the General Fund
  • This effectively makes the Blazers our “tenants”
  1. We’d have help so it’s not ALL on US
  • The state has already committed up to $365 million in bonds for the necessary renovations and Multnomah County has proposed contributing an additional $88 million
  • Upon purchase in 2024, the deferred maintenance costs were estimated to be approximately $482 million over 20 years in order to keep the building at 1995 standards (the year it was built)
  • A major renovation is estimated to cost around $600 million up front, with ongoing maintenance estimated at an additional $285-300 million over 20 years
  • With the State and County contributions, the City would be responsible for the remaining $120 million of those up-front costs (without private funding from an investor)

You can read here about the necessary renovations and their costs on the City’s website, as well as what the City can negotiate for in the lease with the Blazers should they choose to remain in Portland.
